Hi, I saw a comment you wrote on McMama's blog and wondered what kind of lens you got for your Nikon that is the equivalent of the Canon mentioned - 50 mm prime.
I've had my Nikon D40 for a couple of years and would like to get a different lens to "expand my horizons" a bit, even though I don't know much about photography. I'd love to try the blurry look that everyone talks about on her photography blog. Whaddya think? Do you like yours? What kind is it exactly.
I have the Nikkor 50mm/1.8. I love this lens. I'd consider it a portrait lens. It's really good for that sort of distance. I actually have it on my camera all the time now. I got it a few years ago and it didn't work like I thought it would (I didn't understand it). After I read MckMama's tutorial on shooting the "blurry backgrounds" I finally "got it". I put it on my camera for a month to make myself use it and the clarity of pictures and difference in quality is amazing! Now I rarely take it off.
A couple of things to know. This lens does not zoom. You have to physically move to get closer or further away. This can be a bit frustrating if you're out and about and want to take pictures of things other than your children (shocking!)
The other thing is that I think with your camera (the D40) it will not auto focus. I would double check this with the Nikkor/Nikon website, but that can be very frustrating and definitely something you should be aware of before investing.
If you're looking to expand your lenses, I would highly recommend this one. It is by far my favorite!

Thanks for answering, Janeen. Someone else mentioned that about The D40 not supporting autofocus with this lens. Yikes, not sure I'd be brave enough to manually focus, but since my son is 16 now, maybe he'd hold still long enough for me to do so :) For sure my dogs wouldn't!
Do you think that since I'm so spoiled with the autofocus now I wouldn't be able to figure it out?
I think you could definitely figure it out. It's just a good thing to know, and one more thing to think about when you're shooting. One of my friends has the D40 and he bought the portrait lens too because he plans to one day upgrade the body.
I would still say it's a worth while purchase, but I would be really disappointed if I didn't know going in that I'd have to manually focus.
